J French, Oklahoma City’s up-and-coming rap gem, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, returns with another banger, “STAUNCH.” It begins with a mesmerizing beat, female vocal segments, and a carefree hook that immediately draws you in.
J French, a rapper, multi-instrumentalist, and producer from Oklahoma City, has completed what appears to be a lifetime’s worth of music industry experience. Since crafting his first rhyme to Devin The Dude’s “Don’t Wait” at the age of 12, he has formed his own publishing company and collaborated with various rappers in the Oklahoma-Texas and Los Angeles scenes, including RC & The Gritz, Erykah Badu’s official band, and members of TDE. Despite everything, J French remains as cool as a cucumber. He rigorously sticks to a self-imposed necessity to create music from the soul. “I’m determined to be heard,” French says.
As the soundscape progresses and the rap voice enters the picture. There’s a distinct sense of artistic freedom in the music.
The chord progression and J French’s own tremendously varied flow provide a sense of mild theatrics, keeping things colorful and exciting at all times.
This progression is maintained throughout. The latter half of the song sees his flow blast into new realms of speed and unfathomable wordplay – so much so that a second listen is required to really appreciate it.
The track’s beat and entire atmosphere appeal due to its evident and genuine connection to original hip hop. At the same time, specific passages, particularly the melody, contribute to an anthem-like vibe that’s easy to get behind and recognize.
From the crisp and clean nature of the soundtrack to J French’s unwavering and brilliant lyricism and smooth performance, this is without a doubt one of the best new hip-hop tunes of the season thus far.
“STAUNCH” will most likely be a go-to rap hit for many months. The release has a timeless quality to it, and J French’s approach is incredibly refreshing and delivers a constructive impact that leaves you feeling powerful and capable of whatever lies ahead.
