TroubledSpiritband from Washington, DC, has created fantastic and exciting new classic rock music. “Afghanistan.” is a dramatic song that beautifully uses contrast, pouring through with that beautiful combination of passionate melodic delivery and pure distortion and grit.
TroubledSpiritband is a unique classic/progressive rock band led by Jim Ittenbach, a singer/songwriter, guitarist, and flutist. While Troubled Spirit can be more of a musical family with dozens of great players on occasion, the present live lineup consists of Jim Ittenbach: Guitar, Flute, and Vocals Richard Earle (Vocals, Lead Guitar), Richard Earle (Vocals, Lead Guitar) Richard Earle Trevor Burdick (drums, vocals) Pete Czechov is a vocalist and a bassist.
“Afghanistan” is a clear standout, cinematic in its intricacy and engaging in the groove it establishes throughout the motion. It has an otherworldly quality to it, is dreamy and intriguing while yet being peaceful and pleasant. An appealing melodic hook adds a touch of classic-rock optimism to the mix, which is a welcome change.
An emotional and poetic “Afghanistan” roars and rages into the room, bringing with it nostalgic energy that is immediately recognizable in the layers of distorted guitars, power chords, and solos that have been layered together, as well as in the raspy strength and soul of the lead singer’s raspy voice.
TroubledSpiritband stands out as a band that was destined to perform in this manner, and when this is combined with songwriting that is exceptionally thoughtful and imagery-laden, the result is a sound and style that is both refreshing and intriguing.
All of this contributes to “Afghanistan” being a boldly memorable single, with the band on the show, reminding us of the live scenes we’ve missed and the subtle allusion to mental independence and uniqueness that’s softly provocative.
