For “BS*,” ROADRUNNASLUG employs a smooth and lightly dark hip hop beat, layering on it his own distinct style of poetry and performance – the likes of which float somewhere in between rap and melody. The hook sets the tone, and as the song progresses, the tale and premise become apparent.
There’s a lot of space on this record, the vibe is light and atmospheric – laying bare certain ideas and really keeping your focus on the thoughts within, as well as allowing you that room and that time to consider and understand it all.
Musically, “BS*” establishes a somewhat dreamy, hip-hop-inspired soundtrack. The delicacy and upbeat energy work well together. When the rap verse is added – the detail, the tale-telling, the diary-like expression of feelings – the balance between everything works perfectly.
For three brief minutes, “BS*” is hypnotic enough to make you question whether or not you were paying attention. The mix is massive, with colossal blocks of compressed sound making everything sound louder than it actually is, and the whole thing has a lovely sense of whirling excess to it.
“BS*” turns up the volume on the excitement — the music is frenetic and huge, and the vocal speed is furious and perfect throughout. The track is hard-hitting and constantly reminds the rapper’s presence and power behind it all.
Because everything rough comes before anything soft in this track’s arrangement, it works well as a whole. The use of contrast is a potent one, and it’s done well here.
