J French’s return at the start of the new year brings a smooth and soulful hip hop track with mellow energy and calming rhythm. “NEVER BROKE” is a simple track; the building blocks are easy-going and colorful in a classical fashion.
J French, a rapper, multi-instrumentalist, and producer from Oklahoma City, has completed what appears to be a lifetime’s worth of music industry experience. Since crafting his first rhyme to Devin The Dude’s “Don’t Wait” at the age of 12, he has created his own publishing company and collaborated with various rappers in the Oklahoma-Texas and Los Angeles scenes, including RC & The Gritz, Erykah Badu’s official band, and members of TDE. Despite everything, J French remains as cool as a cucumber. He rigorously sticks to a self-imposed necessity to create music from the soul. “I’m determined to be heard,” French says.
“NEVER BROKE” is a more mellow vocal recording approach that begins with some attractive female vocal fragments– the composition keeps the voice sounding like a later addition to the tune, almost as if you’re watching a movie scene.
In this example, the performance fluctuates throughout, increasing intensity as the situation demands. There’s also a faster pace and some great, memorable wordplay, which contributes to the artist’s feeling of character and confidence.
For fans of classic hip hop, this soundtrack by J French is instantly appealing. The music and vocal delivery, both rhythmically gentle yet nevertheless nonetheless heavy and engaging, produce a somewhat classic look that reminds listeners of the genre’s inception.
At the same time, the music is so crisp and creative – clean and fresh in terms of the character depicted and the hook, the plot; this is definitely the product of a modern artist with both skill and love for expressing.
The voice has individuality, and this provides a distinct thread that runs through each and every release. The desire to make genuine music is deep and continuous. Hopefully, there will be more curiosity in the future.
