Christian Black from Brooklyn takes on a smooth and melodic hip hop beat for “Two Sides,” laying his own unique brand of poetry and performance – the likes of which teeter somewhere between rap and melody. At first, the tune appears to be a gentle release. The hook sets the tone, and as the work progresses, the tale and premise become clearer.
Christian Black regularly combines components that are currently popular in hip hop. At the same time, the more of his music you hear, the more that sense of character emerges, and there’s still lots of room to get closer to the writer’s thinking and insight. The beat here does an excellent job of creating the groundwork for the lyrical outpouring that follows.
While the “Two Sides” hook is reminiscent of modern hip hop, the verses have an impressive flow that relies solely on the performer’s skill and efficacy to drive the message home with weight.
“Two Sides” sets things off, a spacious and colorful hip-hop ambiance backs up both bars and melody, the song moves from quiet to rapid, the soundscape grows and changes regularly, much as the title implies. The rap flow is massive, and it appears to become more and more impressively rhythmic and in tune with the music as the song progresses.
The song “Two Sides” is a standout. The first note of the song’s intro riff sounds gloriously fresh and spontaneous. Follow-up flow and vocal tone perfectly match the atmosphere. Every time I hear it, I’m more impressed. The song’s writing is limitless, and the vocal performance is perfect and impressive, with a catchy chorus to balance things out.
It’s an exciting hip-hop track from Christian Black that reveals yet another facet of his artistry by cranking things up a notch or two. Amazingly inventive, with a solid bond between producer and performers.
